1. Our Commitment
Alkebulan Artist Hub exists to uplift African cultural heritage through authentic art and real storytelling. We believe that culture is not a commodity — it is a living inheritance. This policy defines how we protect cultural dignity, community rights, and artistic integrity on our platform.
2. Truthful Storytelling
- Artists must share cultural stories that are truthful and based on their own knowledge and community traditions.
- Stories must not be invented, exaggerated, or adapted to appeal to touristic stereotypes.
- The origin and meaning of symbols, patterns, and motifs must be accurately represented.
- If an artist is sharing a story from their community, they must credit the community and, where possible, the elders or teachers who passed the knowledge to them.
3. Sacred and Ceremonial Objects
Certain cultural objects carry sacred, ceremonial, or spiritual significance. These items require special care:
- Sacred or ceremonial objects may only be listed with documented consent from the relevant community or cultural authority.
- The platform reserves the right to remove any listing of sacred items without proper documentation.
- Artists must clearly indicate if an object is ceremonial, spiritual, or restricted in its traditional use.
- Buyers must respect the spiritual and cultural significance of ceremonial objects and use them appropriately.
4. Cultural Appropriation
We do not tolerate cultural appropriation on our platform. This includes:
- Non-community members claiming to create or sell sacred cultural symbols without authorization.
- Artists misrepresenting their cultural background to sell certain styles of work.
- Copying designs, patterns, or techniques from communities the artist does not belong to without permission.
- Using cultural narratives in ways that stereotype, exoticize, or demean the originating community.
5. Community Consent
When an artist creates work that represents a community tradition — especially one shared across families, clans, or regions — they should seek and document the consent of community elders or cultural custodians. We encourage artists to include community acknowledgments in their artist statements and product descriptions.
6. Buyer Responsibility
- Buyers must respect the cultural meaning of the art they purchase.
- Buyers must not use purchased items in ways that mock, deface, or disrespect the originating culture.
- Buyers must not reproduce, mass-produce, or commercially exploit designs without the artist's permission.
- Buyers should educate themselves about the cultural significance of their purchases.
7. Platform Responsibility
- We review all listings for respectful and accurate cultural representation.
- We consult with cultural advisors and community leaders on sensitive listings.
- We remove listings that violate this policy and may suspend artists who repeatedly disregard cultural protocols.
- We provide education and resources to help artists share their stories responsibly.
8. Reporting Violations
If you encounter a listing, artist profile, or buyer behavior that violates this Cultural Respect Policy, please report it immediately. We take every report seriously and investigate thoroughly. Protecting cultural integrity is a shared responsibility — we need our community's eyes and voices to help us uphold these standards.
9. Living Policy
Culture is living and evolving. This policy will grow and adapt with input from our artist community, cultural advisors, and buyers. We are committed to listening, learning, and improving our protections for African cultural heritage.
